Several aspects to film distribution

Logistics of film

- The company that supplies the actual cinema with the film reel
- They must meet all laws and regulations regarding the film
- The logistics make agreements with the cinema concerning the transportation of the film reels
- The distributor handles 35MM film print ( Around £1000 )
- The production team of the movie rents out the film-prints who rent them out to cinemas
- A working title movie such as THIS IS ENGLAND may only print a small out out due to budget issues, thus reflecting on the overall success of the movie

Prints And Advertising
- Specialized films - smaller advertisement
- Mainstream films - larger advertisement
- Standard poster - 30 x 40 cm ( the most effective format )
- Adverts shown in prime time t.v
- Takes 50% of the films budget
- Pre releases create more hype
- Some movies rely on viral marketing more than others

Digital Distribution
- Movies maybe downloaded into the consumers home
- May give better quality sound
- Quite expensive, but will reduce in price
- Reduces transport costs
- May put cinemas out of business

Vertical integration
Eg:/ Working title would produce, promote films them selfs to generate higher profits and would keep all the processes within the one company

Working Title and Warp Films/Institution and Audiences

1. Working Title Films is a British film production company, based in London, England. The company was founded by Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1982. It produces feature films and some television productions. Eric Fellner and Bevan are the co-owners of the company now. Warp Films, a sister company of Warp Records, was set up in 1999 with funding from NESTA. It is based in Sheffield, England with a further office in London and has 14 full-time staff. At present there have been four releases on Warp Films: My Wrongs #8245–8249 & 117 by Chris Morris, which won the Best Short Film award at the BAFTA Awards, and Shane Meadows's films Dead Man's Shoes and This Is England. Chris Cunningham, responsible for Aphex Twin's videos Come To Daddy and Windowlicker, is responsible for an abstract short film called Rubber Johnny, which features the music of Aphex Twin and was released on May 23, 2005. Rubber Johnny was originally scheduled to be released two weeks earlier, but was postponed due to the original printing firm objecting to the film's content.

2. The ownership of the company would affect the bugdet of the film, because, the more popular and wealthy the company is, the more money they have to spend on a film or T.V.

New technologies to target a more specific audience

Text messaging - Orange Wednesdays, targeted at teenagers who regularly visit the cinemas and have used orange Wednesdays in the past.

Video Games – Allow the film to be promoted through a certain game and would encourage the consumer to watch the movie or buy the game after watching the movie.

YouTube - Film promoters would upload trailers onto YouTube to allow everybody to view them, YouTube would also force you to watch a trailer before watching the desired clip.

Social Networking Sites – Films would be promoted at the younger generation who regularly use the sites, they would also be the genre that would appeal to the consumer.

Emails- Films would send you emails on upcoming films, and things that you are interested in.

above and below the line advertising

Monday, 9 November 2009
Above the line / Below the line advertising...
Above the line / Below the line advertising is a marketing stratagy used to promote a film, the method used depends on what the initial budget of the film is. For example, a movie such as spider man may use above the line advertising, ths could be things like posters, trailers and billboards. On the other hand, below the line marketing might be used by a lower budget film as it is a cheaper method which would still acheive similar effects, for example, the movie 'dead man's shoes' may of used stratagies such as magazines, websites and viral marketing.

Preliminary Tasks

The magazine I did my group, used many different conventions such as we used a picture of a person, in this case we have used the person that will feature most in our magazine. The name of the magazine is also another convention we used. In the magazine we also included a price, and a bar code in the bottom right hand corner. My groups magazine also includes 3 different fonts, and 3 different colours, this is to add attraction to the magazine. The magazine also includes a strap line across the top of the cover in the strap line we have put the magazines slogan. Also the magazine has cover lines to look professional and to show what is to come in the magazine.

My groups magazine only used one picture, we did this because we thought that the one big picture was enough for out front cover because it took up a lot of room, and more picture would of used to much space and made the magazine to filled. In my groups magazine we did not include a date, or an issue number on our front cover.

The colours on the front cover suit the target audience because the colours are bright and its a sporting magazine, it suits light colours, also bright colours are more enjoyable in sport compared to dark colours. The background is a playing field and most games are played on playing fields so the background fits into the subject.

The cover lines help entice the audience, because they are issues to do with sport which people buying the magazine will be interested in. The big picture will also attract readers because they will want to know why he is on the front cover. The way the magazine is set out could be a reason why people want to read the magazine.

I have learnt that a magazine cover has different colours depending on what genre it is, and the colours and fonts must suit the target audience, I have also leant that a magazine cover does not have to include every convention to be a good magazine cover.

Film

This scene is typical of a gangster film because we used an office to film the scene, we filmed a swapping of bags we don't see what is inside the bags but we can tell that its meant to be a secret because there is only to people in the room. We also see a person behind a desk this shows that he is waiting for this package and is expecting it.

An over the shoulder shot is used because in the scene there is speech and this camera angle is the best way to show it, we also used a hand held camera shot to show one of the people walking into the room. These are two main camera angles used because they are used a key points in the scene and have most effect on the film.

What I felt we did well in our film was that we had good continuity through out the film, we also got some really good camera shots and did the job we wanted them to do. We had camera shots that made a big impact on our film. One thing my group didn't do was get all the camera shots we needed in our brief.

I have learnt that mise en scene has a big impact just like desk and bags we used made such a big difference, like with the bags we had the opportunity to become more creative in what we did, for example we had to choose if we would throw the bags on to the table or place them etc..

Continuity is one of the most important things in the film, it just makes the project look professional, and the film itself becomes more entertaining because its always in the action.

Evaluation of Practice

Film

In the practice film, we had to recreate a part of Eastenders we watched in class. The clip was only a minute and a half long. The main aim of the task was to get used to the cameras we were using, to learn the different camera shots, for example- over the shoulder, mid shot, long shot, etc.

The scene we watched was a typical t.v soap because of the way it was set out. It started with characters that were main characters in that episode. It also started in a typical setting the pub, this is typical because the pub features in most of the episodes. We also continue the problem from the episode before, and we instantly get into the story of the episode.

The camera shots involved help get across the piont and help show the body language of the actors involved. The camera shots involved such as, mid shots, long shots, over the shoulder, etc. These shots also help get the piont of veiw of the character across.

Our recreation was very accurate because we managed to recreate the camera shots well including all the camera shots involved in the clip shown to us. We also got the character rolls done well because we all had a character to recreate and we all managed to get the roll of the character across well.

I think we did well in the camera shots but I think we were not in the correct positions to execute the shots we did so it made the film look below the level of quality. The acting in our film was also not the best which makes the film look bad.

I have learnt that everything in films is there for a reason mise en scene helps get across the message of the scene, also showing where the film is, and helps the film look the part. Overall mise en scene is one of the most important things within a film.

Lighting in my project wasn't very effective because we used very little lighting in our project, we used some lighting at the start of the film we made but it wasn't very effective at all, due to how bright the light was already in the room we were using for our film.

The importance of continuity is that it makes the film look all joined up and there is no breaks between filming, it makes the film when finished look a good quality film.

I think I need to work on my filming because during the making of the Eastenders film there was a lot of little mistakes made. For example the position of the camera I never go the best out of the camera shots I used because of this. Also I feel that I need to take mise en scene in my films that I make.

Magazine

The magazine cover I used many conventions that are usually used on a magazine. The magazine I annotated contained a large picture of a person, the price, mast head, cover lines, issue number, date, strap line, 3 fonts, 3 colours, and a bar code.

The magazine I used to annotate broke a couple of conventions. It didn't use a slogan, and it didn't use more than one picture

The magazine I used was a hip/hop music magazine, so the colours used were bright and light colours to reflect the type of music it was about.

The cover lines helped attract readers by saying they were interviews of big hip/hop artist inside.

The magazine appeals to both new readers and regular readers because it has a good colours and famous people on the cover, this helps to interest new readers. It also keeps regular readers because it contains a lot of story's that relate to ones before.

I have learnt that when producing a magazine cover you have to consider a lot of things when designing the cover. For example the colour scheme, pictures and the position of them, the cover lines, slogan, the fonts of the mast head etc.
